A Little History

General Motors was formed in 1908 as a corporation to sell Buick automobiles. Captain Theodore Burton was a ship captain at that time, sailing along the East Coast, Cuba, and the Gulf of Mexico. He and his son Fred had a General Store in Millsboro. They decided to sell cars, and their first brand was Maxwell Motor Company. Also, that year, Fred's son Irwin G. Burton was born.

Fred's son, I.G. Burton, worked for General Motors during WWII. Afterward, he used the business principles he learned to develop the first truly modern dealership in Milford. Theodore Burton Jr., I.G. Burton's brother, owned and operated dealerships.

David Burton, the 4th Generation, took over the family business in 1959. David added several Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) franchises and was the President of the I.G. Burton & Company Automotive Group for over 50 years. Nowadays, Charles Burton is the current President and the 5th Generation of this prestigious family to sell cars, trucks, and SUVs up and down the Delaware and Maryland region.

In 1962, the National Automobile Dealers Association named Irwin G. Burton the Outstanding Dealer in the nation. Our company's mission is To Care, which means treating our customers like family members and taking care of their driving needs from Georgetown to Dover.
